What is the Government Gateway?
It is a place where you can register to utilise the HMRC’s digital services online. While signing up, you will receive a government gateway user ID and password that can be utilised to access many services.
Hence, you can register for your Personal Tax Account/an HMRC online service through the government gateway.
What is the Procedure to Register for a Government Gateway Account?
When you first-time sign up for an online government service, this account is created at that time. You might already have a government gateway account if you have accessed the online services before. But, if you don’t have this account before, then read on.
Follow the instructions if you need to set up a gateway account. We will sign up for one of the most famous online services of HMRC, which is the Self Assessment online service:
Click on the create sign-in details link and enter the following details:
After entering the above mentioned sign-in details, you will find your government gateway user ID generated automatically on the screen. They will send you a mail for confirmation of this ID. Keep in mind that this ID will not appear again on any screen. As you will need it when you sign in again, so it’s essential to note it or print it.
After this, you have to select the type of account you want to create (Organisation, Individual or Agent). If you want to utilise the online service for personal affairs, register as an individual.
If you are a business and need extra government services for business, you will have to register as an Organisation, and if you are an agent, then select the type “agent” of the account.
Then there would be the second step of verification in which you would be asked for some personal details such as phone number or landline number. Again, it is done to secure your account details.
After this second step, you will be asked to answer some essential questions about which HMRC should be familiar. These questions can be about your recent P60, passport, details from your payslip, or they can be based on the details provided by a credit reference agency.
If you provide the correct answers, HMRC will identify you, and your government gateway account will be created. After this, you will need to activate the service to use many services, including the Self Assessment online service of HM Revenue & Customs.
In case you are unable to provide answers, then HMRC will not be able to authenticate you. However, you can call these numbers (0300 200 3600, or 0300 200 3310) for help.
